Aviary

Mezzo + Cl + pno, 8' (2012)

This song cycle sets poems about different breeds of birds by Saba Razvi: the heron, the hoopoe bird, and the blood ibis. The first movement “Blue Heron” features only the voice and piano, and the second, “At Solomon’s Court”, only uses the clarinet and voice. The final movement, “Mirror in Carlsbad Lake”, uses all three performers. This piece was written as part of the writer-composer seminar at USC with composer Frank Ticheli and poet David St. John.
