SATB, 4’30” - 5’

This classic tune from The Sacred Harp has many of the hallmarks of the great tunes of the volume, which has made immesurable contributions to sacred music in the United States in various ways. The stark harmonies, which center largely around perfect fourths and fifths, result from the variety of backgrounds of those who contributed to the volume in the 18th and 19thcentury, some of whom were trained in European-style tonal harmony of the time and some who weren’t. The hymn text speaks of passionate love and human imperfection. This arrangement features several rounds, inspired by “fuging” Sacred Harp tunes.

Other Sacred Harp arrangements: Bound for Canaan, World Unknown, Africa
